About World Public Holidays

Public holidays (also known as bank holidays, national holidays, or statutory holidays) are days when most businesses and government offices are closed. They vary significantly from country to country and can even differ between regions within the same country. Understanding these differences is important whether you are managing a multinational team, planning an overseas trip, or simply trying to avoid scheduling a delivery on a day when the recipient's country is on holiday.

Our holiday lookup tool pulls live data from the Nager.Date API, covering over 100 countries. You can browse holidays for any year, see which day of the week each holiday falls on, and copy the full list to share with colleagues or add to your calendar. The tool also shows whether each holiday is a national observance or specific to a particular region, giving you the granularity you need for accurate planning.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select a country — use the dropdown to choose from over 100 countries. The list is sorted alphabetically, with the United Kingdom selected by default.
  2. Choose a year — the year dropdown shows the current year plus two years either side, allowing you to look back at past holidays or plan ahead for future ones.
  3. Click Show Holidays — the tool fetches live data from the Nager.Date API and displays a table of all public holidays for your selected country and year.
  4. Review the results — each row shows the date, day of the week, holiday name in the local language, and the holiday type (national, regional, or other).
  5. Copy the list — click "Copy List" to copy the entire holiday schedule to your clipboard in a clean text format, ready to paste into an email, spreadsheet, or calendar application.

How It Works Behind the Scenes

When you click "Show Holidays," the tool sends a single API request to the Nager.Date service, passing your selected country code and year as parameters. The API returns a JSON array containing every official public holiday for that country in that year, including the date, the local name, and metadata about whether the holiday is observed nationally or only in specific regions.

The tool then parses this data and renders it into a readable table format. Each date is converted into a human-friendly format showing the day of the week and the month, so you can immediately see whether a holiday falls on a Monday (creating a long weekend) or mid-week. The Nager.Date API is an open-source project that aggregates official holiday data from government sources worldwide, and it is updated regularly to reflect newly announced or rescheduled holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the holiday data come from?

Holiday data is sourced from the Nager.Date API, which is an open-source project that aggregates official public holiday information from government sources for over 100 countries worldwide. The data is updated regularly throughout the year to reflect any changes, additions, or newly announced holiday dates. Because the tool fetches data live from the API each time you search, you always see the most current information available.

Are regional holidays included?

Yes. For countries with regional variations, the API provides holidays specific to each region. In the United Kingdom, for example, you will see holidays that apply to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland separately, since each nation has its own set of bank holidays. Similarly, countries like Germany and Australia have state-specific holidays that are included in the results alongside national ones.

How far in advance are holidays available?

Most countries have holiday data available for the current year and the next year. Some countries may have data available further in advance, depending on when official dates are announced by their governments. Holidays with fixed dates (like Christmas Day or New Year's Day) are typically available well in advance, while holidays that depend on lunar calendars or government proclamations may only appear once officially confirmed.

What is the difference between a bank holiday and a public holiday?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they have slightly different origins. A public holiday is a day established by law when the general population is entitled to a day off work. A bank holiday specifically refers to a day when banks and financial institutions are closed, a term that originated in the United Kingdom under the Bank Holidays Act of 1871. In practice, bank holidays and public holidays usually fall on the same dates, and the Nager.Date API treats them as equivalent.

Can I use this data to calculate business days?

This tool is designed for browsing and reference. If you need to calculate the number of working days between two dates while excluding public holidays, use our dedicated Business Days Calculator. That tool uses the same Nager.Date API holiday data but combines it with weekend pattern detection to give you an accurate working day count.

Why do some holidays appear on different dates each year?

Many holidays are tied to religious or astronomical calendars rather than fixed dates on the Gregorian calendar. Easter, for example, is calculated based on the lunar cycle and falls on a different date each year. Islamic holidays like Eid follow the Hijri calendar, which is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, causing dates to shift annually. Other holidays, like the first Monday in May, are defined by a formula rather than a fixed date.
